How to optimize

LinkedIn has expanded massively since its early days.
What started with only experience, education, and recommendations now includes a long list of optional sections that help you showcase the full spectrum of your work.

These sections exist to capture achievements that are too specialized for Experience or too formal for About.
Think of them as structured extensions of your portfolio.

You can add all available sections through the Add profile section menu at the top of your profile.

Choose additional sections intentionally

LinkedIn offers many sections, but you don’t need all of them. Add only the ones that strengthen your positioning.

Common sections beyond Experience and Education include:

  • Featured posts
  • Licenses & Certifications
  • Volunteering
  • Projects
  • Courses
  • Publications
  • Patents
  • Honors & Awards
  • Test Scores
  • Organizations
  • Languages

Make your entries mutual and collaborative

Some sections gain more power when they’re shared experiences.

When adding items like:

  • Projects
  • Volunteering
  • Certificates

Mention the people you collaborated with and invite them to add the entry to their profile too.

Use certifications to signal your direction

Licenses & Certifications aren’t only for documenting formal training.
They also send subtle signals about where you’re heading.

If you are already mentioning collaborations, consider it also when posting new content.

Spotlight causes you care about

Volunteering isn’t just a nice-to-have section.
It can show leadership, character, and alignment with organizations that matter to you.
